The town:

Saint Petersburg was founded 1703 by tsar Peter the Great, and was renamed from 1914 to 1924 into Petrograd and from 1924 to 1991 into Leningrad. With over 4.7 million ihnhabitants it is the second largest town of Russia after Moscow. The town lies in the northwestern part of the country at the estuary of the Neva River at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland. It is the northernmost metropolis in the world. Since the 18th century St. Petersburg was for more than 200 years the political and cultural capital of the Russian Empire, and is an important cultural center of Europe. With the Hermitage it hosts one of the largest art collections in the world, and is the main Baltic port of Russia. The historic city center is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
